The 2006 Palestinian elections marked a turning point in Palestinian politics, when the Palestinian people overwhelmingly voted out the corrupt Fatah party after years of ineffective leadership. 

Many moderate Palestinians rejoiced, thinking that the Hamas victory could lead to increased social services and a Palestinian Authority that would have the mandate and credibility necessary to enter meaningful negotiations. 

This was not to be the case.
